Composed of a 74-minute geographic film and a text structured in three chapters, the thesis questions the new configurations of rurality and the Italian mountains weakened by more than a century of depopulation and abandonment, places that today, in an era of climatic planetary crisis, become the focus of a series of processes of return and recovery, which redesign and establish new pacts between urbanity and rurality, questioning the idea, inherited by modernity, of an immobile mountain relegated to the margins of the plain. The first part contains Movimento fermo, a geographical film that explores the life trajectories, practices and imaginaries of three young mountain “dwellers by choice”, multifaceted figures, expressions of a contemporary trend of a "return to the mountains", which is bringing a different look to the mountains of abandonment, capable of grasping and enhancing the specificity of their natural and cultural heritage, reinventing new practices that dialogue with different scales, local and global, and realities physical and virtual realities. The second part illustrates the theoretical and methodological framework of the work through three dedicated chapters. In the first chapter, after an initial reconnaissance of the critical-theoretical categories used in this research, a framework is offered on the phenomenon of the "return to the mountains" under study, proposing to read this contemporary trend through the lens of mobility studies, in particular suggesting a dialogue between Alpine studies, mainly of Italian origin, and the approach to the question of geographical mobility suggested by the English geographer Tim Cresswell. The second chapter intends to retrace the theoretical path and reflections that have led to the choice of using geographic film as a research and restitution method to explore the phenomenon of a "return to the mountains". Specifically, after a reconnaissance of the main theoretical approaches of reference that constitute the pillars of this research, some epistemological considerations on filmic geography, a methodology that is still little known and legitimised within the discipline of geography, are presented, delving into the method of investigation used and unravelling its cognitive opportunities in the field of geography. The last chapter goes into the merits of the geographic film Movimento fermo, illustrating in detail the stages of pre-production, production and post-production of the geographical film, while introducing the places and protagonists of the film and introducing some perspectives on the future dissemination of the research project in the academic and public circuit, with the aim of developing a more fruitful dialogue between the university and civil society on a topic that is extremely topical both nationally and internationally.
Composta da un film geografico di 74 minuti e da un testo strutturato in tre capitoli, la tesi interroga le nuove configurazioni della ruralità e delle montagne italiane indebolite da più di un secolo di spopolamento e abbandoni. I luoghi che oggi, in un’epoca di crisi climatica planetaria, diventano il fulcro di una serie di processi di ritorno e recupero, ridisegnano e instaurano nuovi patti tra urbanità e ruralità, mettendo in discussione l’idea, ereditata dalla modernità, di una montagna immobile e relegata ai margini della pianura. Nella prima parte della tesi è contenuto Movimento fermo, un film geografico che esplora le traiettorie di vita, le pratiche e gli immaginari di tre giovani “montanari per scelta”, figure sfaccettate e poliedriche, espressione di una tendenza contemporanea al ritorno che sta apportando uno sguardo diverso sulle montagne dell’abbandono, in grado di cogliere e valorizzare la specificità del loro patrimonio naturale e culturale, reinventando nuove pratiche che dialogano a scale diverse, locali e globali, tra realtà fisiche e virtuali. Nella seconda parte viene illustrato il quadro conoscitivo e teorico-metodologico del lavoro attraverso tre capitoli dedicati. Nel primo capitolo, dopo una prima ricognizione delle categorie critiche utilizzate nella presente ricerca, si offre un inquadramento sul fenomeno di «ritorno alla montagna» oggetto dello studio, proponendo di leggere questa tendenza contemporanea attraverso le lenti dei mobility studies, suggerendo in particolare un dialogo tra gli studi alpini, prevalentemente di matrice italiana, e l’approccio alla questione della mobilità geografica suggerito dal geografo inglese Tim Cresswell. Il secondo capitolo intende ripercorrere il percorso teorico e le riflessioni che hanno portato alla scelta di utilizzare il film geografico come metodo di ricerca e restituzione per esplorare i fenomeni di ritorno alla montagna. Nello specifico, dopo una ricognizione dei principali approcci teorici di riferimento che costituiscono le colonne portanti della presente ricerca, vengono presentate alcune considerazioni epistemologiche sulla filmic geography, una metodologia ancora poco conosciuta e legittimata all’interno della ricerca geografica, approfondendo il metodo d’indagine utilizzato e sviscerandone le opportunità conoscitive. L’ultimo capitolo entra nel merito dell’output audiovisivo Movimento fermo, illustrandone in dettaglio le fasi di pre-produzione, produzione e post-produzione, introducendo al contempo i luoghi e i protagonisti del film e introducendo alcune prospettive di diffusione futura del progetto di ricerca nel circuito accademico e pubblico, con l’obiettivo di sviluppare un dialogo più proficuo tra università e società civile su un tema estremamente attuale in ambito nazionale e internazionale.
