The context of Mount Tabor in the Galilee region in Israel, with a continuity of frequentation since the second millennium BC, has been partially investigated. Abstract

The context of Mount Tabor in the Galilee region in Israel, with a continuity of frequentation since the second millennium BC, has been partially investigated. In order to determine the cult function in this place in antiquity the toponym Atabyrios/Itabyrios is analyzed, from which the same mountain takes its name, where the cult of Zeus probably spread, with the specific name of Atabyrios. The purpose of this poster is to represent the actions that are taking place on the top area of Mount Tabor owned by the Custody of the Holy Land and the possible relationships with other places in the Esdrelon/Jizreel valley. From November 2021 to February 2022 some excavation tests were carried out in three specific areas of the property, in agreement with the Israel Antiquities Authority. Some materials were collected and sampled and are being analyzed at the laboratory of the Kimmel Center for Archaeological Science – Weizmann Institute of Science – Israel, by applying the principles of micro-archaeology with a view to determining a dating of the contexts and therefore a first reconstructive hypothesis of the different phases of occupation.
