This proposal aims at understanding why the medieval and humanistic Latin literature is a “great absent” in the programs of the Italian secondary school, not only of Latin language and literature, but also of history, Italian literature, philosophy, art history. Moreover, it explains that the introduction of this literary production in the programs is solicited by the last decrees promulgated by the Ministry (Brocca, Moratti, Gelmini). Following the pattern of scholars of late-antique literature, the paper suggests concrete proposals to integrate medieval and humanistic Latin literature into the lesson hours, respecting the current timetable, but certainly with the purpose to enrich and complete it. After taking into account some general cases (the teaching of Latin grammar in the first biennium, the approach to intertextuality and reception of classics in the following three years, the support to the study of Italian literature and medieval history), it structures a didactic unity based on Einhard’s Vita Karoli, explaining in detail its goals and development.
