Pratiche sociali e 'mimesi' letteraria nella Siena dei fratelli Bargagli

This thesis studies the literary works of the Bargagli brothers in light of the mundane practices typical of 16th-century Siena. In this sense, the Dialogo de' Giuochi and the Trattenimenti represent interesting works to observe the hybridisation between an 'aristocratic' system of entertainment and its writing forms. The thesis is divided into two parts: in the first, the elements that make worldly entertainment possible are studied; in the second, the transition of the practice from the sphere of the real to that of the printed book is observed. Thus, in the first part, aspects of Sienese Renaissance culture are studied on the basis of three questions. Firstly, the relationship of intellectuals to the city (how is it possible to speak of a civil rhetoric); secondly, observing the relationship between intellectuals and power; and thirdly, reflecting on the institution of the academy and highlighting its capacity as a 'glue' with respect to certain city dynamics. The second part, on the other hand, is entirely dedicated to the work of the Bargagli brothers. Firstly by observing their authorial status and their relationship with the typographic medium; secondly by analysing their works - the Dialogo and the Trattenimenti - in the light of their formal and genre choices. Finally, we proceed with a textual analysis of the two printed volumes. The aim of the analysis is to highlight the rhetorical strategies that allow the practice to migrate towards the rhetoric of writing.

La tesi studia le opere letterarie dei fratelli Bargagli alla luce delle pratiche mondane attive a Siena nel Cinquecento. Il 'dittico' letterario costituito dal 'Dialogo de’ Giuochi' e dai 'Trattenimenti' rappresenta una specola interessante dalla quale osservare la commistione tra il sistema di intrattenimento ‘aristocratico’ della cittadina toscana e le sue forme di fissazione scrittoria. Pertanto, la tesi è articolata in due parti: nella prima si studiano gli elementi che rendono possibile l’intrattenimento mondano mentre nella seconda si osserva il passaggio della pratica dalla sfera del reale a quella del libro a stampa. Più nello specifico, nella prima parte si studiano gli aspetti della cultura rinascimentale senese in base a tre questioni. Innanzitutto il rapporto degli intellettuali rispetto alla città (come è possibile parlare di una retorica civile); in secondo luogo osservando il rapporto tra intellettuali e potere; in terza battuta riflettendo sull’istituzione accademia ed evidenziandone la capacità di ‘collante’ rispetto determinate dinamiche cittadine. La seconda parte, invece, è interamente dedicata al lavoro dei fratelli Bargagli. In un primo momento osservandone lo statuto autoriale e il rapporto con il medium tipografico; secondariamente analizzando le opere – il Dialogo e i Trattenimenti – alla luce delle scelte formali e di genere. In ultima istanza si procede con una analisi testuale dei due volumi a stampa. Lo scopo dell’analisi è quello di evidenziare le strategie retoriche che permettono alla pratica di migrare verso la retorica della scrittura.
