The volume Global Communication Governance at the Crossroads brings together a selected group of international scholars, practitioners and activists to investigate current challenges, trends and transformations in global media policy. It explores changes in the actors, issues, values and contexts of the regulatory environment of media and communications and offers visions for the future of communication governance. This is a collective effort of the IAMCR Working Group on Global Media Policy. Over the past few years, the Working Group initiated a reflection on how the field has changed in 20+ years; on the opportunity to re-think the global as a space for communications to be governed; on the shifting actors, spaces and ideas of media and communications; and on our capacity to anticipate the implications of current shifts in technology design and application, as well as in communication practices and processes, for both policy practice and scholarly investigation. Those reflections inspired the present work—Global Communication Governance at the Crossroads—an edited volume that we trust will allow many, within and beyond the IAMCR community, to critically engage with future arrangements in the governance of media and communication in a “glocal” context. The collection explores this “crossroads” of communication governance in depth, by bringing together scholarly and practice-based knowledges from different disciplines and geo-cultural backgrounds.
