In the last decades many lowlands belonging to the Padanian Plain (Northern Italy) have been flooded several times as a consequence of the collapse of minor-river levees, as it is the case of the tremendous flooding hitting on May 2023 the Emilia-Romagna Region, where over 20 levees failed inundating a very huge area. The preservation of levee integrity represents, therefore, one of the major issues for the Emilia-Romagna Civil Protection Agency, that financed a field trial of a revetment equipped with optical fibre cable to monitor the response of a levee embankment stretch under extreme hydraulic loads. The paper presents and discusses some results of the experimental investigation carried out so far.
