This article presents a review of the current state of knowledge on a particular form of ornament or clothing accessory made of vitreous material, commonly known as a “conical button.” The study focused on specimens from northern Italy, exploring their typology and making comparisons with those from adjacent territories, such as central Italy, the north-alpine slope, and southern France. Additionally, the results of raw material investigations performed on the buttons from Mercurago, the site that yielded the largest number of specimens, are also published. In summary, the following is proposed: dating between BM1 and BM2 and the possible presence of multiple production centers (Piedmont and Emilia). The article also discusses issues related to the origin and disappearance of this production.
