In this paper, we will discuss firstly the state of research on 4th - mid 6th-century cemeteries, particularly the few bioarcheological analyses which are available for some sites, and secondly some of the most important research which is being developed for the later period (mid 6th and 7th centuries). Our focus will be to consider how this kind of specialist analysis can contribute to answering current historical questions.
