The paper analyses a short section of the second book of the anonymous and little-known Vita sanctae Heliae, which contains Helia’s speech to the bishop to urge him to support her choice of virginity against her mother, who would like to see her married. The speech is rhetorically elaborated and constructed with a skilful synthesis of biblical passages and echoes of classical epic poetry.
