In Origen’s recently discovered third Homily on Psalm 73 (H73Ps III, 3, p. 256, 16– 24) the text of the codex unicus is correct and does not need to be corrected. This is a dominant variant in Isaiah 8,23– 9,1, which allowed Christian exegetes to connect the text of the prophet with the miracle at Cana, in the context of the evangelization of the pagans. This paper clarifies the philological and exegetical problems arising from the passage.

Abstract

In Origen’s recently discovered third Homily on Psalm 73 (H73Ps III, 3, p. 256, 16– 24) the text of the codex unicus is correct and does not need to be corrected. This is a dominant variant in Isaiah 8,23– 9,1, which allowed Christian exegetes to connect the text of the prophet with the miracle at Cana, in the context of the evangelization of the pagans. This paper clarifies the philological and exegetical problems arising from the passage.
