The aim of this essay is to analyse how Vasco Pratolini’s novel Cronache di poveri amanti was translated into Portuguese. The question of censorship is inseparable from this analysis, since the Portuguese translation was first published during the Estado Novo. An attempt will be made to show which linguistic and stylistic strategies were used by the Portuguese translator, José Blanc de Portugal, and whether or not they respected the source text.

Abstract
