This article traces the history of MS Napoli, Biblioteca Nazionale Vittorio Emanuele III, VIII.D.39 (late thirteenth century), which transmits Constantine the African’s Pantegni, through an analysis of its marginalia. The notes left in its margins by various readers in the late thirteenth and fourteenth century reveal three distinct forms of ʻuse and reuseʼ : textual refinement, the creation of indexes, and the study of medical doctrines for practical experimentation. Building on this evidence, the article argues that the study of manuscript copies provides valuable insight into how the Pantegni was read and used during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, despite ibeing excluded from university curricula. To this end, the monographic study of the Neapolitan manuscripts is contextualised within the broader history of the transmission of the Pantegni, encompassing more than sixty extant codices dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
