Our aim in this chapter is to show where we believe this profession can transform to meet academic ideals, and what the main bstacles are to effectuating this change. Academically, there has always been a clear divide between two ideals: the text-centred, faithful – or “latere” – approach and the more reader-oriented, free, or “creare” approach (Katan, 2018). While translation practice had been characterised by a “subservient” (Simeoni, 1998) faithfulness to the source text rather than to the target text reader, functionalist theories by the turn of the century had changed the focus towards translator agency and the needs of the readership.

Abstract

Our aim in this chapter is to show where we believe this profession can transform to meet academic ideals, and what the main bstacles are to effectuating this change. Academically, there has always been a clear divide between two ideals: the text-centred, faithful – or “latere” – approach and the more reader-oriented, free, or “creare” approach (Katan, 2018). While translation practice had been characterised by a “subservient” (Simeoni, 1998) faithfulness to the source text rather than to the target text reader, functionalist theories by the turn of the century had changed the focus towards translator agency and the needs of the readership.
