The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to bring new opportunities for improving several services for the Society. In this framework, massive connectivity over large geographical regions represents one of the key issues. In such scenarios, the usage of satellites might represent a viable solution for providing wide area coverage and connectivity in a flexible and affordable manner. This chapter will focus on current solutions for the deployment of Internet of Remote Things (IoRT) services and how it will lead to the Internet of Space Things (IoST). Open issues, new challenges, and innovative technologies will be focused, carefully considering the issues that current IoT standardization framework will impose to the practical implementation of future satellite-based IoRT systems.

Abstract
The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to bring new opportunities for improving several services for the Society. In this framework, massive connectivity over large geographical regions represents one of the key issues. In such scenarios, the usage of satellites might represent a viable solution for providing wide area coverage and connectivity in a flexible and affordable manner. This chapter will focus on current solutions for the deployment of Internet of Remote Things (IoRT) services and how it will lead to the Internet of Space Things (IoST). Open issues, new challenges, and innovative technologies will be focused, carefully considering the issues that current IoT standardization framework will impose to the practical implementation of future satellite-based IoRT systems.Pubblicazioni consigliate
