Aim of the research has been the characterisation of Poa annua L. plants which frequently disrupt the turf uniformity of Italian golf courses greens seeded with Agrostis stolonifera L.. From January 1997 to March 1998, the presence of annual bluegrass has been recorded every 15 days on 11 greens belonging to the golf course of Olgiata Golf Club, Rome. Seed samples have been collected each month to realise analysis of germination and caryological controls of chromosome number. Furthermore, genetic variability among plants belonging to a spot of annual bluegrass collected on a green have been analysed with molecular markers (RAPD). All the plants analysed appeared to be tetraploid (2n=4x=28), belonging to P. annua subsp. reptans and characterised by resistance to very low cutting height. The best periods of the year to try an agronomical control of the weed seems to be November and May. RAPD analysis has shown the presence, within the bluegrass spot which has been analysed, of genetically similar but not identical genotypes; this result confirms annual bluegrass as a prevalently autogamous species mainly propagated by seed.
