The birch is a forest species wide spread in many abandoned areas in hilly and mountain regions. The most important characteristics of birch and its timber, as well as other products deriving from it, are here presented, based on a bibbliographic study. A better knowledge of this species, often considered invasive, would be an advantage for the management for the many italian alpine and mediterranean birch forests.
