This review discusses the possible uses for computer-assisted testing and assessment in developmental study from a theoretical and methodological point of view. The analysis of literature suggests that computer, making more observable the phases of a task solution and the elaboration, implementation and modification of strategies, allows to observe the development of capacity and competence in terms of processes, instead of simply performance outcomes. Moreover, the ways in which the interface familiarity and the different kinds of interfaces could condition subject’s performance are discussed and possible solutions to methodological problems in computer-based testing and assessment are indicated.

Abstract

This review discusses the possible uses for computer-assisted testing and assessment in developmental study from a theoretical and methodological point of view. The analysis of literature suggests that computer, making more observable the phases of a task solution and the elaboration, implementation and modification of strategies, allows to observe the development of capacity and competence in terms of processes, instead of simply performance outcomes. Moreover, the ways in which the interface familiarity and the different kinds of interfaces could condition subject’s performance are discussed and possible solutions to methodological problems in computer-based testing and assessment are indicated.
