317 cloacal swabs were collected from wild birds (305 from Passeriformes, 1 from Strigiformes, 1 from Columbiformes, 2 from Piciformes, 8 from Galliformes) in order to detect avian influenza A viruses and Paramyxoviruses. The survey was carried out in a protected area in Southern Italy (Campania region) between November 2000 and April 2001. Virus isolation was performed according to EU Directive 92/40/EEC and the detection of haemagglutinating agents using HA and sandwich ELISA tests. All the swabs were negative. The results of our investigation represent a further evidence for the minor role played by passerines in spreading avian influenza viruses.

Abstract
317 cloacal swabs were collected from wild birds (305 from Passeriformes, 1 from Strigiformes, 1 from Columbiformes, 2 from Piciformes, 8 from Galliformes) in order to detect avian influenza A viruses and Paramyxoviruses. The survey was carried out in a protected area in Southern Italy (Campania region) between November 2000 and April 2001. Virus isolation was performed according to EU Directive 92/40/EEC and the detection of haemagglutinating agents using HA and sandwich ELISA tests. All the swabs were negative. The results of our investigation represent a further evidence for the minor role played by passerines in spreading avian influenza viruses.Pubblicazioni consigliate
