Hofmannsthal's essay on Amiel (1891) is not only one of the most important documents of the critical interest which Amiel's Journal intime aroused among many writers (Renan, Bourget, Pater) at the end of the XIX Century. It was also one of the first attempts made by Hofmannsthal to resolve, drawing mainly on Goethe and Nietzsche, his doubt about the meaning of poetry in the modern world. Dealing with issues such as the spread of aesthetical dilettantism in European culture and the crisis of Romanticism and its analogical thinking, this early essay anticipates themes that will be developed in some of Hofmannsthal's later writings (as the famous Chandos-Brief) and contributes elements that can help us to understand the crisis which will lead him to give up lyrical poetry for dramatic art.
