A synthetic review on morphological changes of rivers in the Po Basin based on available bibliography was carried out. The review highlights how most of these rivers experienced two main types of channel adjustments: bed incision and narrowing of the active channel, often in combination with a shortening of the river course due to meander cutoffs and a change of the overall channel morphology from a braided to a transitional (wandering) or a single-thread. Subsequently, the main results of more recent researches (PRIN 2005 project: “Recent and present dynamics of river channels in Northern and Central Italy: evolutionary trends, causes and management implications”), with reference to the study cases included in the Po Basin (Orco R., Stura di Lanzo R., Trebbia R., Panaro R.). Such research allowed for a better comprehension and definition of the trends of adjustments and their causes. At last, some concepts with important implications and applications of the morphological evolution knowledge needed for a better management and restoration are discussed.
