The development of numerical representation. Research on numerical cognition in adults has provided important in- sights into the nature and the format of mental number representation. The present study investigates the devel- opment of numerical representations in 5-, 6- and 8-years- old children using a magnitude comparison task with Arabic numbers. Results show a modulation of the dis- tance effect and the size effect as a function of age, sug- gesting a development in the exactness of numerical rep- resentation.
