The ALICE Silicon Pixel Detector consists of two barrel layers of hybrid silicon pixel detectors. In total 9.8x 10^6 pixel cells with 50 micron x425 micron will provide precision tracking information in the high multiplicity environment expected in heavy ion collisions. This paper gives an overview of the system, its components and the test procedures that have been developed.

Abstract
