Pulse labelling experiments indicate that 75Se is incorporated into the midpiece, the area of the spermatozoon harbouring the sheath of mitochondria. Accordingly, spermatozoa from selenium deficient mammals exhibit an altered and fragile midpiece, with mitochondria being irregularly wrapped around the flagellum.
