Using FFS data on births and official data on abortions, focus is first given to trends in planned and unplanned pregnancies during 1970-1995, comparing Italy with the USA and France. The next step is to pinpoint groups where unplanned events are more common. Finally, the relationship between unplanned births and changes in contraceptive behaviour is examined. The planned fertility decline distinguishes Italy from other Western countries. Unplanned births and abortions have also declined considerably during the last twenty years. However, some caution is urged before it may be assumed that Italians are the masters of their own fertility as, during the first half of 1990s, 37% of conceptions were unplanned (at the moment of the event), reaching 45% among under 20 and over 35 years old women.
