In the proposed contribution an approach in terms of automatic optimal design is developed and applied to synthesise a prescribed power density distribution along the surface of the workpiece placed in an induction system with cylindrical symmetry. The design problem, that models numerous practical cases in electrothermal engineering, is solved by means of two different optimisation strategies coupled with a procedure, used to solve the EM field problem, that is useful for axial symmetric induction heating systems and is based on the mutually coupled circuits principle.
