Review of the 6th National Meeting of the Italian Society of Virology, a joint meeting with Virus Group of the Society for General Microbiology (UK)

The Italian Society of Virology (SIV) and the Virus Group of the Society for General Microbiology (SGM) held a joint meeting in Orvieto (18–20th September 2006) aimed at promoting interactions and collaborations between scientists in Italy and the British Isles. The standard of the meeting was exceptionally high, with >200 virologists from Italy, the UK and Ireland participating in lively oral and poster sessions in the wonderful setting provided by the ancient Umbrian citadel. In accordance with the normal format of the SIV National Meeting the conference transcended all areas of virology. Sessions included invited speakers from the UK and Italy together with selected oral presentation. Topics covered included: General Virology and Viral Genetics (D. McGeoch & G. Martelli), Virus–Host Interactions (J. Skehel & G. Campadelli-Fiume), Pathogenesis (G. Smith & A. Dolei) Emerging and Zoonotic Infections (J. McCauley & I. Capua), Immunology and Vaccines (N.
