The study intends to analyse (a) the relationship between health status and socio-economic conditions in light of the most recent data on health conditions in the Italian population, (b) whether the effect of socio-economic factors depends on the individual’s residential context. We find persiting health differences depending on individual socio-economic status. Moreover, environmental context influences the health of individuals, thus individuals living in socio-economically deprived areas are at increasing risk of perceiving a poor health status. Finally, people living in economically less developed regions experience lower health inequalities due to income differences than those living in the more developed regions.

Abstract

The study intends to analyse (a) the relationship between health status and socio-economic conditions in light of the most recent data on health conditions in the Italian population, (b) whether the effect of socio-economic factors depends on the individual’s residential context. We find persiting health differences depending on individual socio-economic status. Moreover, environmental context influences the health of individuals, thus individuals living in socio-economically deprived areas are at increasing risk of perceiving a poor health status. Finally, people living in economically less developed regions experience lower health inequalities due to income differences than those living in the more developed regions.
