In order to establish national guidelines for managing risks associated with cyanobacterial blooms in thè drinking water supply, a project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Health, was recently initiated. This involves a survey of the data already available on blooms with particular attention paid to water bodies used as drinking water supplies and those that occasionally or repeatedly experience the development of P. rubescens blooms. Safe practices and mitigation and recovery measures are also proposed, developed from this current understanding of toxic cyanobacteria blooms in Italy.
