The presence of increasing numbers of immigrants in the European social landscape is not merely a quantitative fact: implying so mani different indicators (economic, social, cultural, political, religious) it produces a qualitative change. Italy is normally considered a monoreligious country: empirical evidence point in the direction of pluralism. This does not make Italy a multicultural country. It lacks a self-comprehension as a plural society, and politics and policies dealing with it. This article, besides synthetizing updated data and statistics, analyzes the Italian legislative process on immigration, as well as on religious pluralism, stressing how the cultural aspects of immigration have not led to the construction of a model of cultural pluralism. In the conclusions the author (given the lack of an ideological reference model) considers the opportunities currently available for constructing a more realistic model of cultural pluralism
