After the next revision of "Paper 24", being carried out by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, the Penman-Monteith equation will get a central role in calculations of water requirements of crops. Soundly founded on the physical principles governing the evaporation process, it requires, along with standard meteorological measurements, estimates of two resistances to water vapour transfer, which are linked to the structural characteristics of the canopy and to stomatal behaviour. In this paper, an analytical model of radiation regime has been coupled to an empirical one describing stomatal response to light, in order to demonstrate a possible strategy for modelling the canopy resistance, easily adapted to any closed canopy.
