The level scheme of the N=78 nucleus 140Sm has been investigated via in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy using the 114Cd(30Si, 4n) reaction. States up to I=22 and Ex=8101 keV have been established. The level structure above the known isomeric 10+ states is discussed in terms of the coupling between the valence particles or holes and the N=78 and N=80 cores.
