The species ecology has been defined after a general environmental introduction, specifically for Susa Valley, also taking into account human impact. Larch stands with shrub undergrowth are put in the Vaccinio-Rhodorendretum ferruginei laricetosum association or, where stands have a substantial presence of stone pine (Pinus cembra) in the Calamagrostio villosae-pinetum cembrae association, whilst grazed park-woods are not put in a phytosociological prespective. The larch covers 71% of the woodlands (51% of which are considered protection forests.
