The algebraic S-matrix model is applied to the description of multistep reactions between very heavy ions. The predictions of the model are compared with those obtained in the conventional coupled-channel approach based on optical potentials and form factors. Positive aspects as well as possible shortcomings in the application of the model are discussed.
