Paclobutrazol was applied as a foliar spray on strawberry plants cv Belrubi, grown under tunnels, before flower emergence at rates equivalent to 6.75, 3.37, 1.68, 0.84, 0.42, 0.21 and 0.10 kg ha-1, with and without a surfactant. The chemical did not affect yield, but plant growth was greatly reduced at all application rates. Petioles were shortened, the leaves appeared tightly adpressed to the crown, leaf surface was greatly reduced and runner formation inhibited. The chemical also affected the dry weight partitioning within the plant, and the leaf photosynthetic efficiency. The presence of the sufactant appeared to be an important factor in attaining a stronger and more uniform control of vegetative growth.
