Abstract

In this paper linear time invariant biological compartmental models are considered, in which the transfer rate constants are assumed to be stochastic variables. An existing procedure for the estimation of the properties of the stochastic transfer rate constants of an n-compartment model from an input-output tracer experiment is extended and the conditions for applying this procedure are discussed. An application to a stochastic two-compartment model of bilirubin metabolism in a normal and two pathophysiological states is shown. The procedure and the obtained results are compared with another approach previously employed. Copyright © 1978 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Inc.
