This paper investigates the time optimal problem for a pendulum whose length can be controlled. Because of Galilei’s law the following conjecture arises: the minimum time problem could be solved by rendering the length of the pendulum as small as possible. The authors discuss situations where the above conjecture is true and situations when it fails.

Abstract
