It is shown that a single model, namely a four-site cluster with periodic boundary condition (4S-ring), is able to describe essential feature of the optical properties of one-dimensional half-filled and dimerized compounds. The spectra of two pi-conjugated representative compounds like K-TCNQ and trans-polyacetylene are used to show how the model is able to fit the experimental data.

Abstract
