The effect of full-dose famotidine treatment (40 mg/nightly for six months) on mucus and peptic secretion was evaluated in 28 patients with duodenal ulcer. After one month of therapy, the drug decreased acid glycoproteins, N-acetylneuraminic acid, and pepsin and increased pepsinogen I, gastrin, and pH. Treatment for an additional six months also showed an increase in neutral glycoproteins and a decrease in pepsin, while the remaining above-mentioned parameters returned to baseline values. The effects were probably due to the presence of superficial gastritis, to gastrin increase, and to a modification in gastric volumes.
