Lifetime measurements have been performed m 31S and 38K. From DSA αγ coincidence measurements with the 32S(τ, αγ)31S reaction mean lives of τm = 720 ± 180 and 320 ± 80fs were found for the levels at Ex = 1.25 and 2.23 MeV in 31S, respectively. Similarly, with the 39K(τ, αγ)38K reaction the mean lives of the 38K levels at Ex = 1.70 and 2.40 MeV were both found as τm = 54 ± 25 fs. From the coincidence measurements excitation energies are deduced. With the recoil P-distance method applied to the 35Cl(α, n)38K reaction, the mean life of the 0.46 MeV level in 38K was measured as τm = 740 ± 160 ps. Detailed information on transition matrix elements is extracted from γ-ray transition strengths and from β-decay. Experimental results are compared with the results of many-particle shell-model calculations. © 1970.

Abstract
