The effect of anorexiant drugs (fenfluramine and mazindol) on arginine-induced HGH secretion was studied in obese children who underwent a low-calorie regime for 8 days during a hospital stay. Caloric restriction per se trends to reduce HGH secretion. The opposite effect is observed during fenfluramine treatment. Mazindol does not seem to interfere with HGH secretion. The slight increase observed in children treated with fenfluramine might be related to the stimulatory effect on central serotonergic receptors shared by this drug. © 1978 the Italian Pharmacological Society.

Abstract

The effect of anorexiant drugs (fenfluramine and mazindol) on arginine-induced HGH secretion was studied in obese children who underwent a low-calorie regime for 8 days during a hospital stay. Caloric restriction per se trends to reduce HGH secretion. The opposite effect is observed during fenfluramine treatment. Mazindol does not seem to interfere with HGH secretion. The slight increase observed in children treated with fenfluramine might be related to the stimulatory effect on central serotonergic receptors shared by this drug. © 1978 the Italian Pharmacological Society.
