The squirrel cage induction motors (IM) are widely used in industrial drives as they are economical, robust and reliable. Their design is a complex engineering task, that requires experienced people and an amount of time. This work presents a novel approach to the automatic design of induction motors. The fuzzy logic facilities have been used to synthesise the expert knowledge for developing an automatic IM design that reproduces the procedure normally followed by a skilled human designer. The paper reports the detailed description of the fuzzy algorithm as well as some IM design examples, that prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract

The squirrel cage induction motors (IM) are widely used in industrial drives as they are economical, robust and reliable. Their design is a complex engineering task, that requires experienced people and an amount of time. This work presents a novel approach to the automatic design of induction motors. The fuzzy logic facilities have been used to synthesise the expert knowledge for developing an automatic IM design that reproduces the procedure normally followed by a skilled human designer. The paper reports the detailed description of the fuzzy algorithm as well as some IM design examples, that prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.
