In four groups of rats (normotensives; two-kidney hypertensives; one-kidney hypertensives; aortic stenosis above the origin of the renal arteries) proteinuria and PRA were measured before and after removal of the stenosis. In the two former groups RPF, GFR and FF were also determined. A direct relationship was found between proteinuria and PRA, which were both high in the two-kidney rats and in the rats with aortic stenosis, while they were normal in the one-kidney rats and in the normotensive controls. In the two-kidney animals the proteinuria was lower from the stenosed than from the contralateral kidney, directly proportional to the degree of renal blood flow reduction. Immediately after removal of the clip the proteinuria and blood flow were similar from both kidneys. On agarose-gel electrophoresis of the urine the proteins migrated principally with the α 2-globulins whilst albumin was relatively scarce. It is suggested that this selective proteinuria is due to the elevation of PRA and related to the renal haemodynamic changes produced by the stenosis.
