Abstract

Despite modern diagnostic and treatment strategies, the 5-year survival rate for HNSCC has improved very little over the past decade. Identifying biological prognostic markers of a greater risk of treatment failure could have a significant impact on the choice of treatment for these patients and the intensity of their posttreatment follow-up. Survivin is strongly expressed in HNSCC, and its multifaceted role in different cellular pathways has placed this inhibitor of apoptosis protein in the front line of cancer research in this area.
