The administration of a complete comprehensive Audiophoniatric, Speech, Cognitive and Academic learning protocol to a sample of 26 children with severe to profound sensoneural deafness treated with cochlear implant shows up favourable development of the main cognitive domains and of basic reading abilities. Reading comprehension appears to be significantly below age-equivalent scores with a slight improvement only for those children with severe deafness and/or verbal language age equivalent or greater than 6 years. Results show how duration of implantation predicts outcomes in verbal short-term memory, and receptive and expressive vocabulary, even when age is controlled first. However, it does not explain reading abilities, suggesting that this variable could be more effective on language acquisition than on higher level learning skills. Some interpretations are attempted on the basis of the literature and implications for clinical evaluation are briefly discussed.
