A projective compression scheme for an n-dimensional data array makes use of at least n+1 compression maps in order to maximize the ability to resolve ambiguities. Analytical relationships are provided in order to render the compression scheme effective. The invention also relates to hardware implementations of the projective compression scheme, and in particular to improved front end circuits that allow for a particularly efficient compressive readout.
