The article shows the derivation of Gauchet's key concept of disenchantment from the study of Kantorowicz's book The king's two bodies. Gauchet wrote a philosophical commentary of The king's two bodies, only a half of which was published in 1981. The complete essay is the most important Gauchet's work before Le désenchantement du monde (1985), because through Kantorowicz Gauchet understood the contribution of Christian religion and theology to the process of secularization which characterizes modern politics and contemporary democracies.
