Abstract

Lead sarcophagi are not frequently found in Aquileia’s Roman necropolises and their employment is here usually linked to religious behaviour. Notwithstanding, according to recent proposals about coffins of Roman western Europe, the matter seems to be more complex, due to the relations with social display, on the one hand, and restless dead on the other one. This paper tries to give considerations to these coffins’ function and aims to contribute in redefining the issue for the site of Aquileia.
