Tra il 1318 e il 1320 Padova subì gli attacchi militari di Cangrande della Scala, vicario imperiale. Si trattava del primo confronto diretto tra le due principali potenze della Marca Trevigiana. In palio vi era la supremazia regionale. Gli assedi si ripeterono a più riprese con diverse variazioni di intensità. Ciò lacerò la compattezza del gruppo dirigente padovano e innescò profondi e frenetici cambiamenti nella struttura istituzionale del comune cittadino, accelerandone la trasformazione in senso favorevole ad una prima, sia pure parziale, affermazione signorile dei da Carrara. It was the first direct confrontation between the two main powers of the Venetian plain. There was the regional supremacy up for grabs. The sieges were repeated several times with different intensity. This kind of military strategy broke the compactness of the Padua leadership group and triggered profound and frantic changes in the institutional structure of the commune, paving the way to a first, even partial, affirmation of Carrara's family. However, the fractures between the hegemonic families were not were not repaired.
