This paper reports on the Data-Driven Information Retrieval panel that was organized at the ECIR 2016 Conference on Monday 21st March 2016 and that took place in the “Sala delle Colonne” of the Botanical Garden of the University of Padua, Italy. The panel originated from the consideration that IR has mostly been concerned with finding the “needle in a haystack” to retrieve the most relevant information able to best address user information needs from huge amounts of data.
