Colonization of forest tree species in small gaps on paleo dunes in the Bosco Nordio Forest (north-east Italy) are discussed. The results show that trees invasion started about 20 years after last coppicing (fifties)and from the edge of the old forest and spread into the gap first slowly and then much more quicker. In order to maintain these important ecosystems (Natura 2000code 2130 "grey dunes"), our suggestion is to coppice again the old forest around the gap to rebuild the previous present environmental conditions.
